Twenty-two Fairtax Criticisms by Hank Van Gieson
7 Comments Published by admin February 14th, 2007 in ArticlesThese are pulled from the comment post on the fairtaxfraud post. I thought it would be better if this was a separate post with separate comments. Nothing has been changed however, just moved.
Hank’s lines are the ones with numbers before them, mine I will put a - in front of after them. Also to be fair to myself here, I am doing these off the cuff, and I probably will not have all the answers, assuming that they are there, at immediate command, so I am just going to comment on what I know for the moment. ANd what I have time for, so I have only done a few so far, more will be filled in as I can do them…
On with the show…

Alternatively, you may wish to spend your time rebutting criticisms of the Fairtax. I’ve spent two years examining the details of HR25 and have gone from supporter to opponent. Here is my list, in no particular order, of concerns I have about the legislation. You are certainly welcome to pick it apart, make corrections, etc. if you choose. Might be more productive and educational for your readers?
Sincerely,
Hank

Before I deal with today’s topic, fairtaxfraud.com and its misinformation. I want to talk more generally about something, this will be showing up on my personal blog as well (which you can find with a bit of hunting). I want to talk about reality. I’ll skip the metaphysical bits here, no what is real, no what is truth. Just reality. We are all colored by so many things, all our experiences, our ideologies, what we learned in school, from our parents, and from our friends. Most of these thoughts really come from another topic, but they apply here as well.
We rarely really look at things how they are. We partially see what we want to see and ignore the rest. We do not look at all the facts, we just look at the ones that fit what we want. If it doesn’t fit what we want then we attack it, also by selectively picking facts that will allow us to do so. When we do this we are not dealing with reality. To really find the value or the truth or the facts of something we need to start at the bottom and work our way up. What I mean by this is, to use the Fair Tax as an example, is that instead of just saying that the FT is good or it is bad, we need to gather the facts, look at them as a whole, and then decide if it would be a good thing for our country. When do don’t deal with reality everything we do or think is flawed, thats not to say that sometimes we won’t hit the right answer anyway, but we will find it far less often than if we really thought through things.
My thoughts brought this topic of the FairTax from reading lots of posts around the web against the FairTax. I found that the majority of the posts against the FT are not rational ones. Even the ones that appear rational are severe distortions, and in some cases due to the complexity of them have to be intentional distortions of reality. This is a bad thing. When we take our own distorted views and put them out there for people to read, some people do believe them, maybe not even consciously. For example take someone who hasn’t heard of the FT in any detail whatsoever, this person reads some ill informed posts or sites against the FT first, that becomes a little ingrained. Their view of the FT is quite possibly going to be a bad one, and the next time that person sees something about the FT they are going to think, oh yeah thats that crackpot thing I read about.
We need a huge effort to combat this. We need good information to try to drive out the bad.
A note from John Linder, support for the FairTax has grown quickly in this congress. And now it is up to you, yes every single one of you, to help it continue.

Another good mention of the FairTax. Keep them coming everyone!
A link to a blog post that is talking about doing taxes this year. Not a horror story like last weeks podcast though.
This is exactly what we need, continuous mentions of the FairTax in as many places as possible.

Good little blog post discussing a poll between different types of tax reform. My one real comment to add is that someone should send Steve Forbes a copy of the FairTax book. If the Flat Tax is down the tubes, at least lets get another supporter.
